Course Details

Assessments / Exams

Both modules are assessed through continuous assessment rather than a final examination.

Care of the Older Person (5N2706) is assessed through a project and practical skills demonstrations, while Care Skills (5N2770) includes a skills demonstration and written assignment.

Learners must also complete 40 hours of work placement in a suitable healthcare or care setting.

Learners may need to complete Patient Manual Handling Training & Cardiac/Basic First Aid Training before completing their work placement which is not provided by City College Dublin.

Qualifications

On successful completion of the Elderly Care Course, learners receive two QQI Level 5 component certificates:

Care Skills – 5N2770
Care of the Older Person – 5N2706

Course objectives

The Elderly Care Course combines practical Care Skills with specialist learning in Care of the Older Person, helping learners develop the knowledge and skills needed to support older adults safely, respectfully and professionally.

Module Aims – Care Skills

The aim of this module is to give learners the knowledge, skills and competence required to provide safe, hygienic and person-centred care in a professional setting.

Understand the range of support needs that may arise in healthcare and care settings.
Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
Develop effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Module Aims – Care of the Older Person

The aim of the Care of the Older Person module is to develop the knowledge, skills and competence needed to provide holistic, person-centred care to older adults across a range of care settings.

Develop practical skills for meeting the needs of older people.
Understand the role of the healthcare assistant in supporting positive ageing and end-of-life care.
Apply best-practice approaches to holistic care.
Understand the range of services and supports available to older people.
