The Level 5 Specific Purpose Certificate in Dementia Awareness & Care is a QQI Level 5 qualification on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). It is designed to give learners a strong understanding of dementia and its impact on individuals, families and wider society, while developing the practical knowledge and skills needed to provide effective, person-centred care.

Throughout this dementia awareness course, learners explore how to support people living with dementia across a range of care settings, including residential care, home care and hospitals. The programme places a strong emphasis on empathy, dignity, communication and compassionate care.

Learning combines theoretical knowledge with practical application through case studies, group discussions, role-play and real-life scenarios, helping learners develop the confidence and skills needed to support people affected by dementia.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold one of the following QQI Level 5 Major Awards:

Healthcare Support 5M4339
Nursing Studies 5M4349
Community Care 5M2786

Applicants must also have a minimum of two years’ experience working as a Healthcare Assistant.

Assessments / Exams

The Dementia Awareness & Care course is assessed through continuous assessment rather than a final examination. Learners complete coursework throughout the programme to demonstrate their understanding and application of dementia care principles.

Qualifications

On successful completion, learners receive a QQI Level 5 Special Purpose Award in Dementia Awareness & Care.

The qualification is designed to support healthcare professionals in developing specialist knowledge and practical approaches to person-centred dementia care across residential, community and healthcare settings.

On completion of this dementia awareness course, the student will be able to…

Understand dementia, including common types, causes and symptoms.
Recognise the individual needs of people living with dementia.
Apply person-centred approaches to dementia care.
Understand relevant policies and legislation affecting people with dementia, their families and carers.
Respond appropriately to behaviours that may challenge.
Create supportive care environments.
Understand how assistive technologies can support people living with dementia.
Communicate effectively with people living with dementia, their families and multidisciplinary teams.

Technical requirements

You will need the following to participate in our Dementia Awareness Course:

A PC with Windows 8 or later or a Mac with OSX 10.5 or later.
An internet connection with a speed of at least 10mbps.
The latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, set to accept cookies and pop-ups.
Adobe Reader, to view content.
Word processing software, such as MS Word or Google Docs.
Some courses include video, therefore your computer must be capable of playing video and sound.

Course structure

Week 1: Student given access to the MOODLE page to begin their studies. There will be a recorded lecture for them to review. (1 Hour) Tutor support via email

Week 2: (2/2.5 hours) – Webinar – including overview of the module, overview of how the blended programme works and assessment criteria etc.

Week 3: (1 Hour) tutor support via Live Session on TEAMS.

Week 4: (1 Hour) Recorded lecture. Learners will also be directed to read specific units in their course notes.

Week 5: (2/2.5 hours) – Webinar – Review of course material. The webinar can be a lecture, a guided discussion or focused on a specific concept.

Week 6: (1 Hour) – tutor support via Email – Study week for students & tutor support, 1 hour for Q&A, assessment questions, additional information etc.
