Professional Diploma in Terrorism & International Security Studies
The Professional Diploma in Terrorism and International Security Studies will be delivered from both a theoretical and also practical and operational perspectives.
While the course will have a certain amount of theory and academic knowledge and context, it will also focus on methodologies that can be applied to operating in dangerous and volatile environments. Case studies will play a significant part to explain to the student how different threats and security situations have developed on a global basis. This will include less well known incidents and operational knowledge gleaned from the course deliverer’s own perspective based on work undertaken in volatile regions.
The current iteration of terrorism and its impact in both the Middle East and Europe will be analysed and allow the student to develop the ability to make calm and reasoned assessments for themselves and not be swayed by the various propagandists and ideologues in the world today.
By the end of this International Security Studies course the student will have been given a solid understanding of terrorism and how it links in with the current security climate. However, they will also be introduced to some of the tool and methodologies being used by a variety of agencies to counter and contain threats. This will be shaped and adjusted so as to be applicable to those who may not intend to pursue a career in this area, but whose career takes them in harm’s way.

Declan Power
Declan Power is a former career soldier who served in the three combat arms of the Irish Army on a variety of operations both at home and abroad. He completed various specialist courses and was attached to the Chief of Staff’s branch at Defence Force Headquarters.
He attended the military college and completed a degree in journalism with Dublin City University, following which he was attached to the Defence Force Press Office. He is also a graduate in Peace and Conflict Studies from Trinity College Dublin and various professional civil and military crisis management training courses and has carried out research and training with the Brunel University Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies in London.
Declan is the author many articles and papers on security affairs as well as Siege at Jadotville, one of the few books dealing with the Irish experience of UN service in the Congo, and is currently researching Beyond the Call of Duty, which examines the stories behind the awards of the Military Medal for Gallantry.
He now works both as an independent security and defence analyst and lectures in Terrorism and International Security at City College, Dublin. When not working in Dublin he has deploys as an adviser to various UN and other operations in Africa and the Middle East. Most recently he was the lead on a project to enhance field protection skills for international civilian agencies in South Sudan, he is also involved in a European Commission project to enhance counter-terrorism mechanisms and strengthen civil society in Africa.

If ever a course was appropriate for the times we live in, then City College Dublin's (Formerly City Colleges) Diploma in Terrorism and International Security studies is that course. The programme provides knowledge, illumination and insight into the field of terrorism as well as the political and security contexts that both influence and are in turn affected by terrorism itself. The course is delivered by Mr Declan Power, a security consultant and former Irish army military officer. I found both his knowledge of the subject matter and classroom delivery to be excellent. In an era of mass education and multiple course choices it is sometimes hard for educational institutions to staff courses with appropriately qualified lecturers. This is definitely not the case with the Diploma in Terrorism. Both Mr Power and the guest lecturers are well qualified content specialists, both in terms of their knowledge and real world experience. As an added support City College Dublin record the lectures so that students can access them if they are not in a position to attend class in Dublin. The other advantage of this use of technology is that the lecture can be seen and experienced again by those students who have attended class. I strongly recommend this course for any person who has an interest in modern political events, international security and other cultures. The course is unique, welcome and relevant for our time.
