The Computer Systems Forensics module aims to enable learners to engage with key system management and investigation theories and concepts with the overall purpose of informing their future management practice. Learners will be encouraged to critically apply the learning from the module to contemporary organisations and a variety of Cybersecurity contexts.

Module Objectives:

Understand system forensics theories and concepts
Use sources to examine contemporary root causes analysis practices
Present arguments effectively to a group of peers and managers
Critically apply management approaches to contemporary information technology disaster recovery management practice

Overview of Computer System Forensics

Definitions of Computer System Forensics
Understanding the factors that determine which Computer System Forensics approach is appropriate
Using analysis approaches to assess risk factors
Using Data sources for effective analysis

Digital Evidence

The origins of evidence gathering approaches in information technology.
Appropriate handling of evidence
Acquisition and storage of Forensic imaging techniques
Hardware Systems
Using magnetic and solid-state storage media
Partitioning and formatting techniques
Caching Data in ROM and RAM storage
Other storage devices like photocopiers, cameras, smartphones

Forensic Analysis

Understanding formats for stored data
Cracking passwords and Keyword searches
Internet history analysis
Using Alternate Data Streams, Registry, Recycle Bin, System logs

Network Forensics

Analysis of what data is on the network
Identifying what the traffic is
Logging of incidents

Module Details

Minimum Intended Learning Outcomes (MIMLOS)

On completion of this module learners will have been enabled to:

Explain key information technology disaster recovery management functions, concepts and techniques and their role in organisational efficiency
Discuss the evolution of information technology cybersecurity theory and its role in the management of operations in modern business
Apply information technology security management concepts, techniques to a variety of Cybersecurity related contexts
Assess the importance of the technical environment and how Cybersecurity issues affect business

Assessments / Exams

The Computer Systems Forensics module is assessed via 40% continuous assessment, which involves three separate assessments, and a 60% proctored exam.

Reassessment Opportunity

Where the combined marks of the assessment and examination do not reach the pass mark the learner will be required to repeat the element of assessment that they failed. Reassessment materials will be published on Moodle after the Examination Board Meeting and will be aligned to the MIMLOs and learners will be capped at 40% unless there are personal mitigating circumstances.
