The Financial Accounting module provides students with a foundational understanding of accounting principles and practices essential for financial reporting and analysis. Covering topics such as the preparation of financial statements, double-entry bookkeeping, and the accounting cycle, this module emphasizes the importance of accuracy, transparency, and ethical standards in financial documentation.

Students learn to interpret and analyse financial data, equipping them with the skills to assess a company’s financial health and make informed business decisions. This module is crucial for anyone pursuing careers in finance, management, or any role that requires financial literacy and accountability.

Indicative Syllabus

Conceptual and regulatory aspects of financial accounting

This part of the module considers the objectives of financial accounting, discusses the stakeholders in financial accounting information, examines the vocabulary of financial accounting, and reviews the fundamental aspects of the conceptual and regulatory frameworks within which financial accounting operates.

Double Entry and Accounting Systems

This part of the module introduces the double entry bookkeeping principles including the maintenance of accounting records and sources of accounting information including ledger accounts, books of prime entry and journals.

Accounting for transactions and events

This part of the module discusses and applies the fundamental accounting standard requirements, relating to property, plant and equipment, intangible assets, investment property, government grants, borrowing costs, provisions, contingent liabilities, inventories, biological assets and current taxation.

Preparation and presentation of consolidated financial statements

This part of the module applies the requirements of relevant accounting standards for the purpose of preparation and presentation of basic financial statements for each of sole traders, partnerships and limited liability companies. Preparation of basic financial statements may incorporate a statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income, statement of financial position, statement of changes in equity and statement of cash flows.

This part of the module also includes consideration of how financial statements can fit into an organisation’s broader integrated reporting framework.

Analysis and interpretation of financial statements

This part of the module applies a variety of techniques including financial ratios to analyse and interpret prepared financial statements for the purpose of drawing conclusions and reporting findings in a professional manner to interested third parties. It includes an understanding of the limitations of the techniques applied. 

Module Details

On completion of this module learners will have been enabled to:

  1. Discuss the nature of the conceptual and regulatory frameworks and how they apply to the practise of financial accounting;
  2. Explain the relationship between the conceptual framework and accounting standards;
  3. Apply the main requirements of specified accounting standards to a range of structured transactions and events;
  4. Prepare and present basic financial statements for reporting entities that comply with the requirements of the regulatory framework within with the reporting entities operate;
  5. Interpret and comment on basic financial statements with reference to common accounting ratios.

This module will be assessed via a 80% Proctored Written Examination and 20% Continuous Assessment.

Where the combined marks of the assessment and examination do not reach the pass mark the learner will be required to repeat the element of assessment that they failed. Reassessment materials will be published on Moodle after the Examination Board Meeting and will be aligned to the MIMLOs and learners will be capped at 40% unless there are personal mitigating circumstances.
