Information technology fundamentals course presents a thorough and systematic coverage of critical issues that underpin today’s information technology industry. It’s a comprehensive overview of the various dynamics that frame the information technology industry and it provides students with a solid knowledge base on the industry pulse points.

Module Objectives:

  • To provide students with an appreciation and analysis of Information technology fundamentals structure, competition, technical and commercial issues facing companies involved in the sector
  • To provide an insight into the key elements that shape today’s information technology environment.
  • To understand the direction and scope of the multifaceted Cybersecurity business
  • Analyse and conceptualise big picture issues both inside and outside the information technology industry.
  • To enable students to implement their academic knowledge to effectively manage the complex information technology industry and manage change.

Indicative Syllabus

Principles and Drivers of the Cybersecurity Environment

  • Drilling down into the hierarchical structure of the industry stage by stage.
  • Mapping out the relationships between the different parts of the Cybersecurity business.
  • Defining all of the key modules involved in making the whole system work one by one.

Cybersecurity Tactics

  • Introducing the technical characteristics of information technology environments that need to be considered from a commercial perspective.
  • Discussing the key medium-term challenges facing the sector especially in light of the Covid pandemic and Brexit.
  • Analysing the effects of changes and innovations within the sector.
  • Providing case studies and practical examples of the issues discussed above.

Digital Behaviour

  • Outline what is and is not included in the scope of digital behaviour
  • Use sources of data to determine the trajectory of this industry
  • Discuss the emerging disruptive trends in the Cybersecurity business
  • Explore how technical changes and Artificial Intelligence effects the Cybersecurity business

Module Details

On completion of this module learners will have been enabled to:

  • Describe the main factors that influence the information technology industry
  • Define and identify all of the elements that characterise the information technology business
  • Identify which contemporary issues are of prime importance and which are of secondary importance when operating a Cybersecurity business
  • Contrast Information technology fundamentals with other types of business areas to gain awareness of the characteristics that are unique to this area
  • Map out the key stages and processes involved in operating a information technology business

Information technology fundamentals module will be assessed via a 60% Proctored Exam and a 40% Continuous Assessment utilizing practical assessments.

The proctored exam will be 90 minutes duration and will consist of multi-choice questions. All questions will carry equal marks and learners must attempt each one. Each question will address at least one of the modules’ learning outcomes.

Where the combined marks of the assessment and examination do not reach the pass mark the learner will be required to repeat the element of assessment that they failed. Reassessment materials will be published on Moodle after the Examination Board Meeting and will be aligned to the MIMLOs and learners will be capped at 40% unless there are personal mitigating circumstances.
