This Security Fundamentals module aims to enable the learner to gain an understanding of how Security Fundamentals works from both the lessor and lessee’s perspective. By the end of the course, the student will be able to understand the key components of a lease agreement and how that works in practice in the Cybersecurity.

Module Objectives:

Understand the basics of information technology Security
Navigate information technology security systems and settings
Manage configurations for cybersecurity protection systems
Maximise value when installed and setting up security systems
Assessing success and failure of security systems

Indicative Syllabus

Internet Security & Encryption

Learners will be introduced to the encryption of static data
Tunnel modes and transport modes will be defined
Virtual Private Networks will be discussed to identify suitable configurations

Firewalls

Learners will analyse packet filters (ACLs) and learn about application gateways
Effective use of SOCKS and Network Address Translation will be discussed

Sniffers and Packet Crafting

Learners will be wireshark and mitigation of sniffer attacks
Best practice approaches to prevent against DNS and IP spoofing attacked will be explored

Intrusion Detection & Prevention

Deployment of IDS systems
Determining the value of Anomaly based Detection and Signature based Detection
Learning about Evasion Techniques and False Positives

IPv6 Security

Studying IPv6 Headers and Extension Headers
Debating how Pv6 Attack tools work and about Firewalling IPv6
Crafting IPv6 packets (using scapy)

Course Details

Minimum Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module learners will have been enabled to:

Develop a security plan that would enable a company to effectively run an online business
Apply writing skills to ensure that a security protocols can be effectively communicated and understood
Use visual and oral communications to develop and make effective visual representation of security systems
Develop and practice effective strategies to manage information technology systems from an operational perspective
Plan and implement effective strategies to ensure that the system is secure against most types of attack
Develop a professional network to establish connections and relationships with others with continuous interaction, nurturing and maintaining relationships that are of mutual benefit

Assessments / Exams

The Security Fundamentals module is assessed via 40% continuous assessment, which involves three separate assessments, and a 60% proctored exam.

Reassessment Opportunity

Where the combined marks of the assessment and examination do not reach the pass mark the learner will be required to repeat the element of assessment that they failed. Reassessment materials will be published on Moodle after the Examination Board Meeting and will be aligned to the MIMLOs and learners will be capped at 40% unless there are personal mitigating circumstances.
